Counseling and Wellness Services at Houston IVF
Few people ever plan on needing medical treatment to conceive a child and build their families. But when they do – and for 1 in 6 couples, this is the case – they are faced with a tangle of emotions that can leave them feeling hopeless and isolated. Infertility is a crisis that can impact nearly every aspect of life, including your relationships, career and self-esteem.
That’s why at Houston IVF we offer our patients a holistic approach to care that focuses on both the mind and body, including on-site counseling services to help our patients with all aspects of infertility, medical and emotional. We recognize that treatment can be stressful even under the best of circumstances, and are aware that there are several issues you need to consider before, during, and after the process.
We provide our patients with a wide range of support, including psychological screening, individual and couples infertility counseling and group meetings focusing on infertility, in-vitro fertilization and egg donation. These services can help you cope with a myriad of concerns that include:
The impact of seeking treatment
Feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, guilt or low self-esteem
Dilemmas in decision-making, including ethical and practical concerns about treatment options
The highs and lows that often accompany infertility treatment
Deciding whether to end infertility treatment and consider other options
Marital stress or communication issues with your partner, friends, and/or family members
Research indicates that group support can help people with virtually any health problem to feel better. In particular, women who attend support groups have been proven to feel less psychological distress than those who do not attend. Condition-based support groups, like those for infertility, do more than offer support, compassion and friendship. They also validate emotions; provide advice and insight into a diagnosis; and offer tips on dealing with treatment and with your relationships, work, family and friends.
Research also proves that despite the hardships, the stressors of infertility can be managed. To that end, Houston IVF offers a Mind/Body program led by Leslee Murphy specifically designed for those struggling to create a family. This program is a series of eight, weekly two-hour sessions that help participants:
Learn relaxation techniques
Manage worries and stress
Learn about nutrition and exercise for infertility patients
